La mattina del 5 marzo 2025, nella sala consiliare del Comune di Aiello del Sabato, si è tenuto un incontro dedicato al patrimonio storico e ingegneristico della regione. L’evento è stato organizzato dal professor Giovanni De Feo, noto come Mr. Greenopoli per il suo progetto di educazione ambientale, dell’Università di Salerno. L’incontro ha riunito esperti locali e internazionali, rappresentanti del territorio e del mondo accademico, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare e preservare il ricco patrimonio culturale e tecnico dell’area. Il sindaco di Aiello del Sabato, Sebastiano Gaeta, ha accolto i partecipanti, tra cui Wayne F. Lorenz, ingegnere capo di Wright Water Engineers, Inc. e rappresentante del Wright Paleohydrological Institute, insieme a Spencer Perry e Jamie Akens.
All’incontro hanno preso parte anche Giuseppe Illiano, Presidente della Pro Loco di Bacoli, Ottaviano Vistocco, Sindaco di Santa Lucia di Serino, e lo storico Ottaviano De Biase di Serino. Graziano Ferrari, Presidente dell’Associazione Cocceius, e la speleologa Raffaella Lamagna hanno contribuito con le loro competenze specifiche. Presenti inoltre il professor Mario Sabatino e gli studenti dell’Istituto Tecnico per Geometri di Avellino, che hanno arricchito il dibattito con una prospettiva tecnica e formativa.
L’evento, seguito dai media locali, ha rappresentato un momento di confronto e scambio di idee, con l’obiettivo di creare sinergie tra i diversi attori coinvolti nella tutela e nella promozione del patrimonio culturale e ingegneristico della regione. Al termine dell’incontro, sono stati organizzati due sopralluoghi tecnici per approfondire lo studio di alcuni siti di interesse.
I sopralluoghi tecnici
Il primo sopralluogo si è svolto in località Cesinali, nei pressi del centro cinofilo, dove è stato individuato un potenziale resto dell’acquedotto augusteo. Tuttavia, le osservazioni preliminari suggeriscono che il manufatto non sia riconducibile al condotto dell’acquedotto romano. Mancano, infatti, elementi tipici come un canale retrostante, residui calcarei o tracce di cocciopesto, che solitamente caratterizzano le strutture idrauliche di epoca romana.
Il secondo sopralluogo si è tenuto in località San Raffaele, sempre nel Comune di Cesinali, dove è stato esaminato un condotto situato alle spalle del centro sociale. Questo manufatto, a differenza del primo, presenta tutte le caratteristiche tipiche dell’antico acquedotto augusteo, confermandosi come un elemento di grande interesse storico e archeologico.
Meeting and Site Visits on Historical and Engineering Heritage in Aiello del Sabato
On the morning of March 5, 2025, a meeting dedicated to the historical and engineering heritage of the region was held in the council chamber of the Town of Aiello del Sabato. The event was organized by Professor Giovanni De Feo, known as Mr. Greenopoli for his environmental education project, from the University of Salerno. The meeting brought together local and international experts, representatives from the area, and academics, with the aim of enhancing and preserving the rich cultural and technical heritage of the region. Mayor Sebastiano Gaeta of Aiello del Sabato welcomed the participants, including Wayne F. Lorenz, Chief Engineer at Wright Water Engineers, Inc. and representative of the Wright Paleohydrological Institute, along with Spencer Perry and Jamie Akens.
Also in attendance were Giuseppe Illiano, President of the Pro Loco of Bacoli, Ottaviano Vistocco, Mayor of Santa Lucia di Serino, and Ottaviano De Biase, a historian from Serino. Graziano Ferrari, President of the Cocceius Association, and speleologist Raffaella Lamagna contributed their specialized expertise. Professor Mario Sabatino and students from the Technical Institute for Surveyors of Avellino were also present, enriching the discussion with a technical and educational perspective.
The event, covered by local media, served as a moment of exchange and discussion, aiming to create synergies among the various stakeholders involved in the protection and promotion of the region’s cultural and engineering heritage. Following the meeting, two technical site visits were organized to further study areas of interest.
Technical Site Visits
The first site visit took place in the municipality of Cesinali, near the dog training center, where a potential remnant of the Augustan aqueduct was identified. However, preliminary observations suggest that the structure is not linked to the Roman aqueduct conduit. Typical elements such as a rear channel, limestone residues, or traces of cocciopesto, which usually characterize Roman hydraulic structures, are absent.
The second site visit was conducted in the San Raffaele area, also in the municipality of Cesinali, where a conduit located behind the social center was examined. Unlike the first site, this structure displays all the typical features of the ancient Augustan aqueduct, confirming its significance as a site of great historical and archaeological interest.
